His four assistants or council consisted of Roger Williams, William Coddington (who refused to serve), Randall Holden, and John Sanford of Portsmouth. John Coggeshall's granddaughter, Rebecca, married Peleg Wood, son of John (2) and grandson of John (1) Wood.

Unconfirmed info which disagrees with some of the above: "Peleg Wood b. about 1669 died unk, married Rebecca Coggeshall in Portsmouth, RI. Peleg is son of John Wood (c. 1635 - 1703) m. Mary Peabody (unk), Portsmouth, RI. John Wood is son of John Wood (c. 1587 -1655) of London and Portsmouth, m. Margaret Carter (unk - 1643). He died in Portsmouth she on Long Island. They had at least six children. John married again to Elizabeth Hall who had two daughters. Not sure of his date of birth, but he did die at Portsmouth in 1655 and is often confused with John Wood of Plymouth."
